There is no worse notification for a D2C founder: “Your ad account has been restricted.” Usually it arrives at the worst time, two days before a sale or right after you finally found a winning ad.
Take a breath. Most restrictions can be resolved if you handle them carefully. Panicking and opening five new ad accounts usually makes it much worse.
Step 1: Find out exactly what is restricted
Open Account Quality in Meta Business Suite (you can also reach it from the notification). It shows what has been restricted and why. It could be:
- One ad rejected: only that ad is stopped
- The ad account restricted: no ads can run from that account
- Your personal profile restricted from advertising: affects every account you manage
- The business portfolio restricted: affects all assets in it
Each needs a slightly different response, so read carefully before acting.
Step 2: Understand the common reasons
For ecommerce brands, restrictions usually come from:
- Payment problems: a failed card charge or a card used across many accounts
- Unusual activity: logging in from new devices or countries, a sudden spending jump on a new account
- Repeated ad rejections: several rejected ads in a short time
- Policy issues in ads: before and after images, health or weight loss claims, misleading discounts, personal attributes (“Are you overweight?”)
- Website issues: a landing page that does not match the ad, missing contact details or return policy, very slow or broken pages
- Identity checks: Meta asks you to verify who you are and you have not done it
Step 3: Fix the cause before you appeal
An appeal without changes often gets rejected. Before requesting a review:
- Delete or edit any rejected ads
- Update the payment method and clear any outstanding balance
- Turn on two factor authentication for every admin
- Remove admins you do not recognise
- Check your website has a clear address or contact details, refund policy, privacy policy and working pages
- Complete identity verification if asked
Step 4: Request a review
In Account Quality, click Request review. Keep your explanation short and factual:
We are an ecommerce brand selling handmade cotton clothing. We believe the restriction may be linked to a failed payment last week. We have updated the payment method, enabled two factor authentication for all admins and removed an old ad that was rejected. Our ads promote our own products shown on our website. We request a review.
No anger, no long story. Meta reviewers handle huge volumes and short clear notes help.
Reviews can take anywhere from a few hours to a couple of weeks. If you are a Meta advertiser with access to support chat, open a ticket as well.
Step 5: While you wait
- Do not create a new ad account to get around the restriction. Meta treats that as evasion and it can lead to permanent bans across your business.
- Shift short term effort to organic Reels, email, WhatsApp broadcasts and influencer posts
- Keep a short note of every change you made and when, in case Meta support asks
How to prevent restrictions
- Warm up new ad accounts slowly. Do not jump from ₹500 a day to ₹50,000 a day in week one
- Keep one stable payment method
- Avoid claims you cannot prove, before and after images and words that call out personal traits
- Make sure every ad matches what is on the landing page
- Keep a clean website with policies and contact details
- Limit who has admin access, and use two factor authentication everywhere
- Review Meta’s advertising standards whenever you launch a new type of product
Frequently asked questions
How long does a Facebook ad account restriction last? Some are lifted within hours after a review. Others take weeks. A few are permanent if Meta upholds the decision.
Can I appeal more than once? Usually the review option is limited. Make your first appeal count by fixing the issues first.
Why was I restricted when I did nothing wrong? Automated systems sometimes flag accounts by mistake, especially new ones with sudden activity. That is why a calm, factual review request matters.
Will my pixel data be lost? The pixel and its data belong to your business assets and usually remain, even if one ad account is restricted.
